NSF demands independent probe into scandalous purchase of CCTVs in JU; Seeks CM’s intervention

The National Secular Forum (NSF) has reiterated its demand for independent probe into the scandalous purchase of CCTV cameras by the Jammu University (JU) authorities for installation in Directorate of Distance Education (DDE), as the authorities have failed to take action against the accused officials.

NSF state chief, Dr Vikas Sharma, while addressing a press conference here today, alleged that Vice Chancellor Prof Ramji Dass Sharma, who claims himselves to be an ultra honest person, abets corruption in the varsity. “JU authorities purchased CCTV cameras from the firm other than approved one and that too of different specification for installation in DDE buildings.”

Dr Sharma claimed that JU authorities were about to clear the payment of the said work but when media highlighted the scandal, the same was stopped. The RTI query in this regard was answered by JU authorities stating therein that “Due to the different in specification of the CCTV cameras neither the bills have been entertained nor payment has been made to the firm so far. As and when the said bills are entertained and passed for payment the desired information can be sought.” The NSF state chief sought clarification from the JU authorities as to why no one checked the specification of the CCTVs as well as the executing agency before installation of the same in DDE buildings. As per the approval conveyed by University,  these Cameras were to be purchased from M/S Cadnica Electronic Corp which was not adhered to, and that these CCTV cameras were purchased from other unapproved firm with ill intention and ulterior motive for the unknown reasons, he said while quoting a news report. He alleged that something was fishy in the deal struck by JU authorities while purchasing CCTV cameras and that too from the local funds of DDE which is totally inappropriate and misuse of local funds collected from students for their welfare.

He asked the Vice Chancellor to state reasons why he didn’t take action against the officials who facilitated this act of corruption and his silence indicates that everything was done with his kind approval. Dr Sharma urged the Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor of the University to immediately take cognizance of the irregularities being committed in the University of Jammu at the earliest otherwise Institution would be spoiled. Among those who were present in the press-conference included Papinder Singh, Manmohan Singh, Rishikesh Rana, and Istaq.
