In the wake of the tragic rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, which shocked the nation, a high-level committee headed by Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean of Government Medical College Jammu, has approved significant security enhancements for medical facilities in Jammu.
A committee, including Medical Superintendent SMGS Hospital Jammu Dr. Dara Singh, Dr. Narinder Bhatial, Medical Superintendent GMCH, SHO Bakshi Nagar and other officers, led by Principal GMC Jammu, has approved the deployment of armed police personnel in sensitive areas of SMGS Hospital and Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Jammu.
According to the meeting minutes, “A total of 20 armed police officers will be stationed at SMGS Hospital on a round-the-clock basis, with their specific locations determined by the administration in coordination with the Medical Superintendent. For GMCH Jammu, the Medical Superintendent has requested at least 35 armed police personnel, including 15 female officers.”
These officers, equipped with weapons and communication tools, will be deployed in four key areas: the Emergency department, Mortuary, Indoor wards, corridors and staircases, and Outpatient departments (OPDs).
GMCH Jammu will also introduce an Emergency Code System, enabling immediate communication with the on-site police post during any incident. This system will ensure a rapid response and mobilization of all available manpower to the affected area.
The committee has also mandated daily security patrols within the hospital premises to maintain public order. Additionally, new CCTV cameras will be installed throughout the hospital, with at least one local security personnel assigned to monitor each floor.
These extensive security measures aim to prevent incidents like the recent tragedy in Kolkata and ensure the safety of both medical professionals and patients. The implementation of these protocols represents a significant advancement in hospital security in the region.
