The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, celebrated his 89th birthday on Saturday, marking the occasion with a message of resilience and dedication to his spiritual mission.

Currently recuperating in the United States following a knee-replacement surgery, the Tibetan spiritual leader assured his followers of his overall well-being and unwavering commitment to spreading Buddhist teachings. In a heartfelt message released by his office in Dharamsala, India, the Dalai Lama expressed gratitude for the prayers and well-wishes from Tibetans both within and outside Tibet. “I am nearly 90 now but don’t feel unhealthy, except for the slight discomfort in my legs,” he stated, encouraging his followers to remain “happy and relaxed.” Despite acknowledging some physical limitations due to aging, the spiritual leader maintained a positive outlook. “I feel physically fit and wish to ask you to be happy and relaxed,” he said, emphasizing his determination to continue serving as a proponent of Buddha’s teachings. The Dalai Lama reflected on his lifelong dedication to spreading Buddhist philosophy, noting, “Until now, with the title of the Dalai Lama, I have made a contribution to a certain extent to people in and outside Tibet and many parts of the world with regard to the Buddha’s teaching.” He reaffirmed his resolve to persist in this mission “with all my heart.” Meanwhile, celebrations honoring the Dalai Lama’s birthday were held with great enthusiasm in Mcleodganj, India. The event drew notable attendees, including Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang as the chief guest, along with Lok Sabha member from Arunachal Pradesh Tapir Gao, Sikkim Assembly Speaker Mingma Norbu Sherpa, and Deputy Speaker of Ontario State Parliament Bhutila Karpoche. Several ministers from Sikkim and other dignitaries also joined the festivities, underscoring the widespread respect and admiration for the Tibetan leader.

As the Dalai Lama enters his 90th year, his message serves as a testament to his enduring spirit and the continued significance of his spiritual leadership in the global community. Despite health challenges and political complexities, the Tibetan leader’s commitment to peace, compassion, and Buddhist philosophy remains undiminished, inspiring millions worldwide.
