Sajjad Kargili, a vocal advocate for the rights of Shia Muslims, who contested Lok Sabha Elections in 2019, took to social media platform X to highlight the ongoing atrocities. In a post from his account @SajjadKargili_, he stated, “The killings of Shias in Parachinar, Pakistan, are not a new issue. We have been raising our voices for the people of Parachinar for the past 18 years.” Kargili’s statement underscores the long-standing nature of this crisis, which has seen an alarming rise in recent years.
“Approximately 600,000 Shia Muslims in Parachinar are under siege. The government of Pakistan has failed to establish peace in the Kurram Agency specifically and in Pakistan generally,” said Kargili, an Alumni, Jamia Millia Islamia. His comments reflect a broader concern that the Pakistani government either lacks the will or the capability to curb these sectarian killings.
Kargili’s accusations extend beyond Parachinar to other regions with significant Shia populations, including Gilgit Baltistan, Gwadar, Karachi, and other parts of Pakistan. “In regions where Shia Muslims reside, they are being systematically killed by Pakistani authorities,” he asserted, painting a grim picture of widespread persecution.
“This situation demonstrates that either the state is complicit in these systematic killings, or it has failed to control them. This is a matter of great shame,” Kargili emphasized, using the hashtag #SecureTheParachinar to rally support and draw global attention to the plight of Shia Muslims in Pakistan. The allegations by Sajjad Kargili highlight the urgent need for an independent investigation into the claims of state-sponsored violence against Shia Muslims. The international community’s response will be crucial in addressing this humanitarian crisis and ensuring the safety and security of vulnerable populations in Pakistan.
