Following his recent victory in the Doda Assembly constituency, Mehraj Malik, the newly elected Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA, emphasized the need for a strong coalition in Jammu & Kashmir to counter the ruling BJP’s influence.
Malik acknowledged the public’s clear mandate favoring the National Conference (NC), suggesting that it reflects the people’s deep-rooted sympathy and trust in the NC’s vision for the region. “The public has given the mandate to NC, so somewhere the public has more sympathy for the party,” Malik stated in a media briefing.
“The Aam Aadmi Party, as part of the alliance, is committed to taking every possible step to curb the BJP’s dominance, which has threatened democratic principles. It is crucial to form a government that stands united against the BJP’s growing control. To improve the condition of the country, a strong alliance is imperative at both regional and national levels.”
Malik’s statement comes at a time when alliances are being re-evaluated across India, with political players realigning to check what they term as BJP’s “dictatorship”. AAP’s victory in Doda is seen as a foothold in the region, and Malik’s stance underscores a larger strategy among opposition parties in J&K and beyond, aiming for a cohesive front to challenge BJP’s policies.
Observers note that Malik’s remarks may bolster momentum for a broad-based coalition across Jammu & Kashmir, which could include regional heavyweights like NC and PDP, alongside emerging influences like AAP. The statement also signals a willingness within the AAP to collaborate and potentially enhance its footprint in a politically volatile region.
