Prominent activist Dr. Sandeep Mawa on Tuesday staged a protest in Srinagar, where he publicly burned the American flag while branding the United States as “the biggest terrorist in the world.”
Flanked by his supporters and holding tricolors, Mawa accused the US of promoting global unrest and violence. “The United States has destabilized nations in the name of democracy. It is time the world calls out its double standards,” he said.
During the protest, Mawa also launched a scathing attack on the National Conference (NC), accusing the party of fueling communal politics for electoral gains. “Omar Sahib, during the assembly elections you held your cap in your hands seeking votes. Now, we are holding our caps in our hands, urging you to shut liquor shops in Kashmir and vacate encroached temple lands,” he said.
Mawa expressed concern over rising communalism in the region, blaming elements within both Hindu and Muslim communities for promoting division. “We believe in Hindu-Muslim brotherhood, but there is a section within both communities that thrives on communalism,” he added.
The protest drew attention not only for its strong anti-US sentiment but also for Mawa’s appeal for interfaith harmony and his criticism of local political leadership for failing to uphold cultural and religious sensitivities.
