Former Sadar-e-Riyasat Dr. Karan Singh has said the political career of Ghulam Nabi Azad “almost over,” following the recent assembly elections in the union territory, in which his newly formed party couldn’t win even a single seat.
Speaking to ANI, Dr. Singh delivered a stark verdict on Azad’s decision to leave the Congress party and form the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP). “His political career is almost over. If he had remained in Congress, he could have played a significant role. But after leaving and forming his own party, he is completely finished,” Dr. Singh stated.
The veteran politician suggested it was time for Azad to consider retirement from active politics, noting that the DPAP had vanished into thin air following the assembly elections. Drawing from his own experience, Dr. Singh added, “Every person should retire. I am sitting comfortably. I am not in any post – it is not necessary that everyone should have a post all their lives.”
Commenting on the upcoming chief ministerial appointment, Dr. Singh extended his congratulations to the Election Commission, the J&K Lieutenant Governor, and the Government of India for successfully conducting the elections. While acknowledging that the mandate was given to the INDIA alliance, he emphasized that “in reality, it seems clear that the mandate was given to the National Conference.”
Regarding Omar Abdullah’s impending role as Chief Minister, Dr. Singh expressed confidence in the leader’s maturity. “Omar Abdullah has now matured sufficiently. I believe he will act very carefully for a better Jammu and Kashmir, in consultation with others,” he observed. The statements come at a crucial juncture in J&K politics witnessing the apparent decline of once-prominent political figures like Ghulam Nabi Azad.
