As an intense heatwave continues to grip the Jammu region, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has initiated a unique measure to provide respite to the residents. In a bid to cool down the scorching roads and public spaces, the civic body has started sprinkling water across major thoroughfares and hotspots within the city limits.
Recognizing the severity of the heatwave conditions, which have pushed temperatures well above the 40-degree Celsius mark, the JMC has deployed its workforce and water tankers to carry out the water sprinkling exercise. The initiative aims to bring down the surface temperatures and create a more bearable environment for pedestrians, commuters, and roadside vendors.
“The heatwave has taken a toll on the daily lives of our citizens, stated a senior JMC official. “By sprinkling water on the roads, we hope to lower the ambient temperature and offer some relief, especially in congested areas and marketplaces.”
The water sprinkling drive is being conducted during the peak hours of the day when the heat is at its most intense. JMC teams are focusing their efforts on key areas such as the city center, busy intersections, and crowded markets, where the impact of the heatwave is particularly severe.
Residents and shopkeepers have welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude towards the civic body’s efforts to mitigate the scorching conditions. “The sprinkling of water has made a noticeable difference,” said a local shopkeeper. “It has become slightly more bearable to step out during the day.”
However, some environmentalists have raised concerns about the potential wastage of water resources and the need for more sustainable solutions to combat heatwaves in the long run.
The JMC has assured that the water being utilized for the sprinkling drive is sourced from treated water supplies and does not contribute to the depletion of freshwater resources. Additionally, the corporation has urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, and take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
As the heatwave continues to persist, the water sprinkling initiative is expected to be carried out across Jammu until the weather conditions improve, providing temporary relief to the city’s inhabitants.
