As Jammu and Kashmir approaches its much-anticipated Assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finds itself navigating a landscape fraught with internal discord and external challenges. While the party’s high command, alongside its state unit in Jammu, has made efforts to placate disgruntled leaders who were denied the party’s mandate, the real test lies in whether the supporters of these sidelined leaders will rally behind the chosen candidates. This unresolved issue poses a significant threat to the party’s electoral prospects.
The BJP’s attempt to reintegrate leaders who initially voiced discontent after being dropped from the ticket list has been somewhat successful. However, visible factionalism at the constituency level, particularly in key areas such as Akhnoor, Jammu North, Chamb, Ramnagar, and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, suggests that these divisions could undermine the party’s vote share. If left unaddressed, these fractures within the party’s local leadership could prove costly in the upcoming elections.
Adding to the BJP’s woes is the reinvigorated opposition, particularly the National Conference (NC), which has entered into an alliance with the Congress. This coalition has taken an aggressive stance on several critical issues, including the restoration of Article 370, the demand for statehood, and the provision of jobs and electricity, issues that resonate deeply with the electorate and directly challenge the BJP’s track record in the region.
Furthermore, the senior BJP leader Davinder Singh Rana, who left the National Conference, following the abrogation of Article 370, has added another layer of complexity. Rana, who has recently taken up the cause of daily wagers in Jammu and Kashmir, has promised to regularize their services within days of forming a government, or else he would resign from the BJP. His stance has not only created ripples within the party but also provided ammunition for the opposition to question the BJP’s commitment to its promises.
Meanwhile, some Jammu-based leaders of the National Conference are actively exploiting these vulnerabilities, employing tactics aimed at discrediting the BJP’s promises and winning over voters. As these leaders capitalize on the BJP’s perceived shortcomings, the party faces an uphill battle in retaining its influence in a region where it has previously enjoyed considerable support.
The upcoming Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir are shaping up to be a litmus test for the BJP. The party’s ability to manage internal divisions, counter an energized opposition, and deliver on its promises will be critical in determining its electoral success.
