According to reports, Kulwinder Kaur’s actions were triggered by a remark Ranaut had made during the height of the farmers’ protests in 2020. In a viral video, Kaur can be heard saying, “My mother was sitting there and protesting when she [Kangana] made that remark,” referring to Ranaut’s statement that women in the farmers’ protest were paid ₹100 each to sit at the Delhi borders.
Kaur, who has now been suspended and faces a police case, stated that she had reacted to the actor-politician “disrespecting farmers.” Reports suggest that Kaur belongs to a family of farmers, which may have fueled her strong reaction to Ranaut’s controversial comments.
Following the incident, Ranaut shared her “concern” for the increasing “terrorism and extremism” in Punjab. She also provided her account of the incident, stating, “As soon as I came out after the security check, the lady in the second cabin, a CISF security staff came from the side, hit me on my face and started abusing me. When I asked her why she did so, she said that she supports farmers’ protest.”
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken note of the incident, with its chief, Rekha Sharma, calling for strict action against Kulwinder Kaur. Sharma said, “Strict action should be taken against the lady CISF personnel. We at @NCWIndia have taken up this matter with @CISFHQrs.” The incident has reignited the debate surrounding the farmers’ protest and the tensions between various stakeholders.
