Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Saturday lauded the enactment of three new criminal laws in the country, describing it as a “clear indication” of India’s evolution and a “watershed moment” for society.
Addressing a conference on ‘India’s Progressive Path in the Administration of Criminal Justice System’ in the national capital, the CJI stated that the new laws have transitioned India’s legal framework on criminal justice into a new age. “I think that the enactment of three new criminal laws by the Parliament is a clear indicator that India is changing. India is on the move, and we do need new legal instruments to deal with the current challenges that we envisage for the future of our society,” Justice Chandrachud said.
He emphasized the profound impact of criminal laws on society, stating, “These laws signify a watershed moment for our society because no law affects the day-to-day conduct of our society like the criminal law.”
The CJI revealed that India is set for a significant overhaul of its criminal justice system with the upcoming implementation of these three new laws. Justice Chandrachud stressed the importance of adaptability among those responsible for implementing the laws, stating, “The new laws would be successful if those in charge of implementing them, adapt to them.”
He further highlighted the “much-needed improvements” introduced by the new laws to “protect the interests of victims and carry out investigation and prosecution of offences efficiently.” While the CJI did not specify the three laws he was referring to, his remarks underscore the judiciary’s recognition of the need for legal reforms to keep pace with the changing times and address contemporary challenges.
The enactment of these new criminal laws is expected to bring about significant changes in the country’s criminal justice system, with implications for victims’ rights, investigative procedures, and prosecution processes. As India continues its progressive path, the Chief Justice’s endorsement of these legal developments signals the judiciary’s commitment to upholding justice and adapting to the evolving needs of society.
