Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today addressed concerns over a controversial fashion show held at the popular skiing destination of Gulmarg, emphasizing that the government had no role in the event’s organization or execution.
Responding to concerns raised by various members in the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister clarified that the event was a private affair held at a privately-owned hotel on March 7, with no governmental involvement at any stage.
“Inquiry into the matter was promptly initiated, and preliminary findings have been established,” Abdullah informed the House. He acknowledged that the event, which took place during the holy month of Ramadan, had hurt public sentiments—a reaction he deemed both understandable and justified.
Expressing his disapproval, he criticized the organizers for failing to respect the cultural and social sensitivities of the region. “Concerns have been raised that such an event should not have taken place during Ramadan. I completely agree. In fact, I would go a step further and state that such an event should not have been held at any time of the year in a place like Gulmarg, considering the cultural ethos of our region,” he asserted.
Reiterating the government’s non-involvement, Abdullah stated, “The administration was neither consulted nor did it provide any financial or logistical support for the event. No government infrastructure was utilized, nor were any government officials present.” The Chief Minister further disclosed that authorities have been directed to examine whether any legal provisions were violated during the event. “If any law has been breached, appropriate action will be taken,” he assured. He concluded by stating, “Had the matter been brought to our notice beforehand, we would not have permitted it.”
