The death of an individual under mysterious circumstances while in custody at Gandhi Nagar Police Station in Jammu district has resulted in the suspension of two police officials and the attachment of Station House Officer (SHO) to the District Police Lines (DPL) Jammu.
The incident, which took place on January 31, 2024, has cast doubts on the circumstances surrounding the demise of Sahil Saini, son of Romesh Saini, a resident of Nagri, Kathua. Sahil was apprehended in connection with FIR No. 20/2024, under sections 457/380 of the Indian Penal Code, filed at Gandhi Nagar Police Station on January 30, 2024. Following his arrest, he was granted a four-day police remand by the Learned 3rd Additional Munsiff Court, Jammu.
Confirming the disciplinary actions, a police spokesperson underscored the commitment of District Police Jammu to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident. Additionally, the District Magistrate Jammu has been approached to initiate a Magisterial Enquiry, ensuring a comprehensive inquiry into the matter.
As per standard procedure, Sahil’s body was transferred to Government Medical College (GMC), Bakshi Nagar, Jammu, where a request has been made for the formation of a Board of Doctors to conduct an autopsy. An Executive Magistrate 1st Class will oversee the autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.
