The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has once again demonstrated its preparedness and efficiency in handling critical situations at sea. In the face of Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) ‘Remal,’ which made landfall on the intervening night of May 26-27 on the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, the ICG’s exemplary coordination with central and state agencies played a pivotal role in preventing any loss of life or property at sea.
The Headquarters of Coast Guard Region (North-East) swiftly launched pre-emptive measures, ensuring seamless coordination with various central and state agencies. This proactive approach enabled the ICG to effectively manage the situation and mitigate potential risks associated with the cyclone.
As the cyclone approached, the ICG deployed its ships, aircraft, and shore-based surveillance systems to maintain proactive surveillance and strategic diversion of the entire merchant fleet from the storm’s path. Timely alerts were broadcast from the ICG’s Remote Operating Stations at Haldia and Paradip, warning fishing boats and transiting merchant vessels about the impending danger.
In the aftermath of the cyclone’s landfall, the ICG sprang into action, with Ship Varad promptly sailing from Paradip to conduct a comprehensive post-cyclone assessment. Additionally, two ICG Dornier aircraft took off from Bhubaneswar and carried out extensive surveillance in the North Bay of Bengal, ensuring that no maritime assets were left stranded or in distress.
The ICG’s remarkable preparedness and seamless coordination with central and state agencies played a crucial role in averting a potential maritime disaster. This coordinated effort not only safeguarded lives but also protected valuable property and infrastructure from the cyclone’s wrath.
The successful management of Cyclone Remal underscores the ICG’s unwavering commitment to maritime safety and security. It also highlights the importance of inter-agency cooperation and coordinated efforts in effectively addressing natural calamities and ensuring the safety of coastal communities and maritime assets.
