The Indian Navy has swung into action, initiating comprehensive preparatory measures to mount a robust Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) response in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, which is expected to make landfall along the coastlines of West Bengal and Bangladesh late on the night of May 26, 2024.
As the cyclonic storm, forecasted to intensify into a severe cyclone, approaches the eastern coast, the Indian Navy has mobilized its resources and assets to ensure a prompt and effective relief operation for the safety and welfare of the affected populace.
According to the latest updates from the Naval Headquarters, two ships equipped with essential HADR and medical supplies have been readied for immediate deployment to the potential strike zones. Naval aviation assets, including Sea King and Chetak helicopters, as well as Dornier aircraft, have been placed on standby for rapid airborne operations. In a proactive measure, specialized diving teams with requisite equipment have been stationed in Kolkata to provide prompt assistance in case of any contingencies. Additionally, further diving teams are on standby in Visakhapatnam, ready for swift deployment if required.
To bolster the relief efforts, the Navy has positioned two Flood Relief Teams (FRTs), along with HADR and medical supplies, in Kolkata. Moreover, two FRTs each from Visakhapatnam and Chilka are on high alert, prepared to be deployed at short notice to augment the existing resources on the ground.
The Eastern Naval Command, under whose jurisdiction the impending cyclone falls, is closely monitoring the situation and has activated its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure a well-coordinated and effective response.
“The Indian Navy remains vigilant and is closely monitoring the evolving situation to provide immediate and effective assistance in the wake of Cyclone Remal,” stated a senior naval official, emphasizing the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of the affected communities. As Cyclone Remal inches closer to the eastern coastline, the Indian Navy stands prepared to leverage its resources and expertise to mitigate the potentially devastating impact of the cyclonic storm and aid the affected populations in their hour of need.
