The Centre of Women Studies at GCW Parade Ground, Jammu, celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2024 with great fervor and enthusiasm. The event, which took place today, was presided over by the esteemed Principal, Dr. S.P. Sarswat, and witnessed the participation of the convener of the Women Studies Centre, Dr. Seema Malpotra, along with other esteemed committee members.
Marked annually on February 11th, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science aims to spotlight the invaluable contributions of women and girls in the realm of science and technology. This year’s theme, “Women and Girls in Science Leadership – A New Era for Sustainability,” resonated strongly with the participants.
As part of the celebration, a screening of the movie “The Vaccine War” was organized for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the institution’s smart classroom. The movie depicted the remarkable endeavors of a team of female bioengineers who, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, spearheaded the development of an indigenous vaccine in a race against time.
The film not only captivated the audience but also served as a source of inspiration, showcasing the intellect, innovation, and resilience of the women scientists involved. The students were deeply influenced and rejuvenated by the heroic portrayal of female figures in the movie, igniting a sense of empowerment and aspiration among them.
The event garnered participation from esteemed personalities in academia, including Dr. Shally Chadha, Dr. Pallavi Jamwal, Dr. Asha Rani, Prof. Usha Devi, Prof. Komal Bangotra, Dr. Dinesh Jamwal, Prof. Sukhvinder Kour, Dr. Iesha Sharma, and Dr. Sumit Sharma, further enriching the discourse on women’s role in scientific leadership. The celebration served as a poignant reminder of the importance of gender inclusivity and empowerment in the field of science, fostering a conducive environment for the advancement of women and girls in scientific endeavors.
