Senior journalist, author and activist Bhasha Singh has sharply criticized those who recently garlanded the perpetrators of the Bilquis rape case, calling their actions reprehensible and a blatant display of double standards.
In a fiery address, Singh expressed her displeasure over the glorification of criminals involved in such heinous crimes and slammed those who use such incidents as a “political tool.”
Speaking at a press conference, Bhasha Singh minced no words in condemning the actions of these miscreants. “Those who are not hesitant to garland the perpetrators of the Bilquis rape case, yet raise a hue and cry in other incidents like the Kolkata gang rape, are guilty of adopting double standards. Their actions are nothing short of condemnable,” Singh said.
She emphasized that such individuals show a complete disregard for the dignity and safety of women across the country. “These miscreants demonstrate no respect for the women of this nation. They should be ashamed of their actions,” she remarked, calling on society to hold these individuals accountable for their disgraceful behavior.
Singh also pointed out the disturbing political motives behind these actions, stating that the glorification of criminals is being used as a strategic move to manipulate public perception.
“They commit such acts solely as a ‘political tool’. Their aim is to further their political agenda, even if it means disrespecting the victims and undermining justice,” Singh asserted. Her remarks drew attention to the dangerous trend of politicizing crimes against women for personal or political gain.
In her impassioned speech, Singh also addressed a broader concern about the state of democracy and the rule of law in India. Drawing a powerful analogy, she referred to the bulldozer as a symbol of destruction, not just of physical structures but of justice and democratic values. “For me, the bulldozer is a symbol of suppression. The year 2025 will mark 100 years of the RSS, and the preparations we see across the country raise serious concerns,” she said.
Singh pointed out the growing influence of certain sections of the media, legal fraternity, and intellectuals who, according to her, are being co-opted into a system that suppresses dissent and undermines constitutional principles.
“You want to keep a section of media, lawyers, intellectuals, and even the judiciary in your hands to present an image of constitutional rule, but this is nothing more than a façade,” she stated.
The senior journalist also voiced her concern over the increasing challenges faced by those fighting for justice and upholding the rule of law. “Exposing these miscreants and their agenda has become a Herculean challenge. The PM may claim to uphold the Constitution, but what we see happening on the ground tells a different story,” Singh warned.
She further noted that while India is presented as a country where constitutional principles are respected, the reality is much more complicated. According to her, a dangerous shift is underway where the very institutions meant to protect democracy are being compromised.
“Internationally, it may appear that our country operates under the rule of law, but domestically, the truth is starkly different,” she added, pointing to the urgent need to safeguard India’s democratic values.
