In a significant political development in Jammu and Kashmir, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has signaled its willingness to join forces with the National Conference (NC) and Congress, albeit with conditions.
This move comes on the heels of a high-level meeting between Congress Chief Malikarjun Kharge and NC leader Dr. Farooq Abdullah in Srinagar on Thursday, where the two parties discussed an alliance and seat-sharing arrangements.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, speaking at her party’s manifesto release function on Saturday, offered conditional support to the potential NC-Congress alliance. “We will completely support the National Conference and Congress alliance if they accept our agenda,” Mufti stated, emphasizing that her party’s primary concern is not securing seats but advancing its political vision for the region.
Central to the PDP’s conditions is the resolution of the Kashmir issue. Mufti made it clear that power and seats are secondary to her party’s core objectives. “If they accept to follow our agenda, which includes the resolution of the Kashmir issue, we will extend our full support to the alliance in Jammu and Kashmir,” she affirmed.
The PDP chief also took a firm stance against any post-election alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Reflecting on past experiences, Mufti explained, “We had forged an alliance with BJP to safeguard the identity of J&K, but when the decision has already been taken, an alliance with BJP on the basis of agenda is not possible now.”
During the manifesto release, Mufti outlined key promises, including the opening of traditional routes, provision of 200 free units of electricity, continued efforts towards resolving the Kashmir issue, and initiating dialogue processes if the PDP comes to power. This development adds a new dimension to the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, potentially reshaping alliances as the region prepares for upcoming elections.
The response from the NC and Congress to PDP’s conditional offer remains to be seen, and could significantly influence the electoral dynamics in the union territory. As the situation evolves, all eyes will be on how these major political players navigate their differences and potential common ground in the interest of forming a united front. The coming days are likely to see intense negotiations and strategic deliberations among these parties, with far-reaching implications for the political future of Jammu and Kashmir.
