In a significant stride towards sustainable development and environmental stewardship, the Indian Navy and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) have joined forces under the Government of India’s green initiative and the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
This collaboration has led to the delivery of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus from IOCL to the Indian Navy for trials and performance testing, marking a notable step in the nation’s commitment to eco-friendly advancements.
The Indian Navy’s initiative to harness hydrogen as a clean fuel is set to revolutionize sustainable transportation within the Armed Forces. The hydrogen-powered bus, unveiled today, epitomizes the collaborative efforts of the IOCL and the Indian Navy to reduce carbon footprints, enhance air quality, and achieve national environmental goals.
An MoU was signed between IOCL and the Indian Navy, under which IOCL has committed to providing the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus for operational trials. The MoU was signed by Vice Admiral Deepak Kapoor, Controller of Logistics, Indian Navy, and Dr. Kannan Chandrasekaran, Executive Director, IOCL, in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, and Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman, IOCL. This partnership aims to facilitate a comprehensive study on the performance, durability, and operational reliability of the Fuel Cell Bus in public transit applications. The operation of the hydrogen-powered bus by the Indian Navy will allow for extensive testing and evaluation, providing valuable data to guide future sustainable transportation initiatives. This endeavor symbolizes a determined embrace of innovative solutions to tackle the pressing challenges of climate change and energy security. By leveraging the potential of hydrogen as a clean fuel, the Indian Navy is paving the way for a new era of sustainable transportation within the Armed Forces, reflecting the nation’s dedication to environmental preservation and energy independence.
