The mysterious disease that has gripped Badhal village of district Rajouri, since December last year continues to claim lives, exposing glaring inefficiencies in governance and healthcare systems. Amid this crisis, the erratic political posturing of Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali, former MLA and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Budhal, raises serious questions about his priorities and leadership.
Zulfkar, who lost in the last assembly elections by a margin of 18,908 votes, has taken to Facebook to share his concerns. Unfortunately, his posts appear to do more harm than good, contributing to the already heightened anxiety among the people of Badhal.
Misleading the Public: Allegations on Administration
In a Facebook post on January 23, Zulfkar accused the district administration of mishandling the quarantine process, alleging that officials forcibly took women, children, and elderly residents to quarantine facilities between 12:30 AM and 2:00 AM. He criticized the administration for acting insensitively during harsh winter conditions, which added to public apprehensions.

Khatana appealed to the public to cooperate with authorities, contrasting sharply with Zulfkar’s approach, which some viewed as counterproductive.
Zulfkar’s statements undermined public trust in the administration without offering constructive solutions. At a time of humanitarian emergency, his response appeared more focused on political rhetoric than on addressing the crisis effectively.
Inconsistent Criticism and Political Opportunism
On January 25, Zulfkar shifted his focus to the Omar Abdullah-led government, criticizing it for poor governance, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and staffing shortages at GMC Rajouri. While some of his concerns may hold merit, his contradictory positions have drawn criticism.

His call for Alliance MLAs to resign seemed less about genuine concern and more about political opportunism.
Leadership Challenges: Prioritizing Politics Over Welfare
As Badhal’s residents struggle with the mysterious disease, Zulfkar’s priorities appear disconnected. Instead of focusing on relief efforts, he has been engaged in BJP’s national council elections, attending Republic Day functions as a chief guest, and enjoying high tea at Raj Bhawan.
This perceived detachment has not gone unnoticed. Social media users have criticized his lack of empathy and accused him of politicizing the crisis. Public comments on his posts reflect growing discontent with his approach.
The Need for Responsible Leadership
In contrast, BJP MP Er Gulam Ali Khatana has demonstrated responsible leadership by advocating for public cooperation and a collaborative approach to tackle the crisis. His efforts underscore the need for leaders to prioritize public welfare over political maneuvering.
Zulfkar’s handling of the Badhal crisis highlights the pitfalls of self-serving politics. Strong leadership and decisive action are crucial during emergencies, and his inconsistent statements and misplaced priorities have only exacerbated the community’s suffering.
Javid Iqbal: A Leader on the Ground
Local MLA Javid Iqbal Chowdhary has emerged as a beacon of hope during the Badhal crisis. Despite defeating Zulfkar Ali in the last elections, Javid has maintained a strong connection with his constituency. Videos circulating on social media show him interacting with locals on buses, in small gatherings, and addressing concerns directly. His hands-on approach has earned widespread appreciation and reaffirmed the public’s faith in his leadership.

Meanwhile, some individuals have resorted to unfounded accusations, attempting to tarnish reputations rather than supporting efforts to resolve the crisis. National Conference MP Mian Altaf Hussain Larvi had to issue clarifications in response to such allegations. These distractions only detract from the urgent need to address the public health crisis effectively.
Coordinated Efforts: The Way Forward
It is worth noting that then-CM Omar Abdullah personally visited the affected village, while the Rajouri district administration and the UT administration under Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha have been working tirelessly to mitigate the crisis. Leadership during such times requires empathy and action—qualities exemplified by Javid Iqbal and others actively addressing the situation.

Leaders would do well to remember that their actions, or lack thereof, are being closely scrutinized, not just by their constituents but by history itself.
