The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) carried out a successful rescue operation to save the life of a critically-ill fisherman aboard an Indian fishing boat named ‘Jazeera’ around 40 nautical miles off Beypore, Kerala, on May 7, 2024.
According to reports, the fisherman had suffered a near-drowning incident after falling into the sea. Although he was rescued by the crew of the fishing boat, his condition deteriorated due to excess water in his lungs.
In response to a medical distress call from the vessel, the ICG swiftly mobilized its resources. An Advanced Light Helicopter with a medical team was dispatched from Kochi, along with the ICG ships Aryaman and C-404.
The ICG assets located the fishing boat, and the critically-ill fisherman was airlifted to Kochi. He was subsequently shifted to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment. The swift and coordinated efforts of the Indian Coast Guard ensured that the fisherman received timely medical attention, potentially saving his life.
This rescue operation once again demonstrated the ICG’s commitment to its motto, “Vayam Rakshama” (We Protect), highlighting its crucial role in safeguarding lives at sea. The Indian Coast Guard has been actively involved in various search and rescue missions, providing assistance to distressed vessels and individuals in coastal areas and the high seas.
