In a heartwarming and proud moment, the Indian Army today celebrated the 100th birthday of Lance Naik Charan Singh (Retired), a veteran who exemplifies a century of extraordinary life and military service.
Born on September 7, 1924, in Himachal Pradesh’s Ropar district, Charan Singh’s life is a testament to courage, commitment, and the indomitable spirit of a soldier. Charan Singh began his illustrious military career on August 26, 1942, at Firozepur Cantt, enrolling in the Indian Army during the height of World War II.
His journey took him to the battlefronts of Singapore and Lahore, ultimately leading to Yol Cantt in Himachal Pradesh. Serving in the Army Service Corps, Singh’s dedication and valour during the war earned him the prestigious Burma Star Award, an honor recognizing his service in the Burma Campaign. He was also awarded the Indian Independence Medal, marking his contribution to the nation during pivotal times.
After 17 years of service, Lance Naik Charan Singh retired from the Indian Army on May 17, 1959, but his legacy as a soldier continued to live on. Now residing in Dekwala village with his family of four sons and two daughters, Singh remains a respected and cherished figure, both in his family and within the Army fraternity.
To honour this remarkable milestone, a team led by a Brigadier from the Indian Army joined Singh and his family in the celebrations, reaffirming the Army’s tradition of maintaining lifelong ties with its veterans. This celebration is not just a personal milestone for Lance Naik Charan Singh, but a significant event for the Army, showcasing its deep commitment to honouring the service of its retired soldiers.
“Soldiers never truly retire,” said an Army spokesperson, “they remain a part of the Indian Army family for life, contributing to the community and inspiring the next generation.” This ethos is woven into the fabric of the Army’s culture, where veterans are celebrated through various welfare programs, reunions, and community activities.
