In a display of exceptional skill and dedication, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully evacuated a critically-ill Indian national from a foreign vessel off the coast of Gujarat on July 21, 2024. The operation, conducted under challenging weather conditions, highlights the ICG’s commitment to ensuring safety at sea.
The evacuation took place approximately 20 kilometers from the Mangrol coast in Gujarat, where the Motor Tanker Zeal, sailing under the flag of Gabon Republic, had reported a medical emergency. The patient, an Indian crew member, was experiencing alarmingly low pulse rates and lower body numbness, necessitating an immediate medical evacuation. Responding swiftly to the distress call, the ICG Air Enclave at Porbandar dispatched an Advanced Light Helicopter to the scene. The rescue team faced significant obstacles, including high-intensity winds and heavy rainfall, which made the operation particularly hazardous. Despite the inclement weather, the ICG helicopter successfully navigated to the Motor Tanker Zeal. In a precise maneuver, the aircraft positioned itself above the vessel and lowered a rescue basket to safely evacuate the patient.
Following the successful retrieval, the helicopter transported the ill crew member to Porbandar for urgent medical attention. The patient’s current condition has not been disclosed, but he is receiving necessary care at a local medical facility. This rescue operation underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s readiness to respond to emergencies, even under the most adverse conditions. It also highlights the importance of maintaining a well-equipped and trained maritime rescue force to ensure the safety of seafarers in Indian waters. The ICG’s swift and effective response in this situation serves as a testament to India’s commitment to upholding international maritime safety standards and providing humanitarian assistance when needed. As monsoon conditions continue to affect maritime activities along India’s western coast, this incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by seafarers and the crucial role played by coast guard services in ensuring their safety.
