In a momentous event slated for March 6, 2024, the Indian Navy is set to commission the MH 60R Seahawk helicopters, marking a significant milestone in India’s defense modernization efforts.

The commissioning ceremony will take place at INS Garuda in Kochi, signifying the induction of these multi-role helicopters into the naval fleet. Designated as INAS 334, the Seahawks squadron’s integration into the Indian Navy stems from a 24-aircraft Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract inked with the US government back in February 2020.

“The commissioning of MH 60R Seahawk helicopters underscores our commitment to enhancing maritime security and bolstering our naval capabilities,” said Admiral K. Singh, Chief of Naval Staff, Indian Navy. “These versatile helicopters, equipped with advanced technology and weaponry, will play a crucial role in safeguarding our maritime interests and ensuring a secure environment in the Indian Ocean Region.”

The induction of MH 60R Seahawk helicopters heralds a notable surge in India’s maritime prowess, bolstering the Navy’s capabilities across various domains. These versatile helicopters, designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and vertical replenishment (VERTREP), promise to significantly augment India’s naval operational capabilities.

“We are confident that the MH 60R Seahawk helicopters will serve as force multipliers for the Indian Navy, enabling us to effectively counter emerging threats and maintain superiority at sea,” Admiral Singh added.

One of the critical highlights of the MH 60R Seahawk is its rigorous testing in Indian Reference Atmosphere (IRA) conditions, ensuring seamless integration into the Indian Navy’s fleet. Equipped with advanced weapons, sensors, and avionics suite, these helicopters are tailor-made to address both conventional and asymmetric threats, thereby bolstering India’s maritime security framework.

“The commissioning of the MH 60R Seahawk helicopters is a testament to the strong defense cooperation between India and the United States,” remarked a spokesperson from the US Embassy in New Delhi. “We are proud to partner with India in enhancing its maritime capabilities and contributing to regional security and stability.”

The deployment of MH 60R Seahawk helicopters underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its blue-water capabilities, thereby extending the operational reach of the Navy over vast maritime domains. In particular, their deployment in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) is poised to strengthen the Navy’s maritime presence, serving as a deterrent against potential threats while fostering a secure and stable environment in this strategically significant region.

The commissioning of the Seahawks aligns seamlessly with the Indian Navy’s steadfast dedication to fortifying maritime security, resonating with the Government of India’s overarching vision of ensuring Security And Growth for All in the Region. This milestone reaffirms India’s resolve to uphold its maritime interests and safeguard the maritime commons, thus reinforcing its position as a formidable maritime power in the Indo-Pacific region.
