The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India has approved a community radio station Radio Tawi Dhara, for the Central University of Jammu. This community radio station will broadcast programmes 24×7 on 91.2 MHz once it gets established. The radio stations will be run by the students of Mass Communication and Journalism and other departments of the University. It is to be known that this radio station has been named Radio Tawi Dhara, after the Tawi river, which has cultural and religious importance among the Jammuites, especially the Dogras. The experts related to local folk arts, cultural, social, development related and agriculture around Jammu division and university will be there in making radio programmes.
Students of various departments of the university will also be able to take first hands on training at CUJ. It will be supervised and operated by the Media Department of the University. On this occasion the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ashok Aima, Registrar, Dr. Ravi Kumar, Faculty President, Finance Officer, Executive Engineer, Dr. JN Ballia and Dr. Bachcha Babu were present, all congratulated the Mass Communication Department for this prestigious project. “I am happy that after a lot of hard work and wait, we have got this community radio, I am sure that the purpose for which the department and the university came up with the idea of establishing it, we will fulfill it, I remember when we selected the name of the radio, many names came up but nothing worked out”, said Prof Aima.
“Then I called, late Padma Sachdev ji and requested her to suggest some names which would have cultural association of the whole state. I am confident that this project of the University will become the axis of cultural activities of the entire state along with other departments of the University, not only for the courses of the students of the Media Department, but also for the local community”, Prof Amia added. The Radio Tawi Dhara will be the first community radio to be set up in any educational campus in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
