In a display of deepening defense cooperation, the 5th edition of the Joint Military Exercise ‘DHARMA GUARDIAN’ between the Indian Army and the Japan Ground Self Defence Force kicked off today at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. Scheduled from February 25th to March 9th, 2024, this annual exercise alternates between India and Japan, fostering a robust exchange of military expertise and tactics.
Comprising 40 personnel each from both sides, the Indian Army contingent, represented by a Battalion from the Rajputana Rifles, joins hands with troops from Japan’s 34th Infantry Regiment to enhance combined capabilities for executing joint operations in semi-urban environments, in line with Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.
Under the banner of ‘DHARMA GUARDIAN,’ the exercise emphasizes physical fitness, joint planning, and honing tactical skills, including establishing Temporary Operating Bases, executing Cordon and Search Operations, and conducting Heliborne operations and House Intervention Drills. Furthermore, a Weapon and Equipment Display will showcase India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, highlighting the nation’s growing defense industrial capability.
Lieutenant General TOGASHI Yuichi, Commanding General of Japan’s Eastern Army, is slated to visit India on the sidelines of the exercise. His presence underscores the significance of the Indo-Japanese defense partnership. During his visit to the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges on March 3rd, 2024, he will witness Combat Shooting demonstrations, Special Heliborne Operations, and House Intervention Drills, further strengthening bilateral cooperation. With a focus on sharing best practices in tactical operations, ‘DHARMA GUARDIAN’ aims to enhance interoperability and camaraderie between troops of both nations. This exercise serves as a pivotal platform for fostering defense cooperation, solidifying the bond between India and Japan, and advancing shared strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
