Karnataka’ Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has stirred controversy with his assertion that he will ensure the supply of Cauvery river water to Bengaluru residents “by hook or by crook.” This statement follows an alleged promise made by Shivakumar to voters in support of his brother D K Suresh’s re-election bid from Bangalore Rural.
Addressing reporters, Shivakumar reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the water supply issues faced by Bengaluru residents, stating, “We are there to solve the problems…It is our duty; we are doing it. I want to communicate to them that we are there to sort out their problem, by hook or by crook we will serve them water.” A video clip circulating on social media purportedly shows Shivakumar making a pledge to residents of a housing society in his brother’s constituency, linking the provision of Cauvery river water to their support for D K Suresh.
The BJP’s IT department head, Amit Malviya, condemned Shivakumar’s remarks, accusing him of abusing his power and holding voters to ransom. Malviya criticized Shivakumar for allegedly making threats to withhold essential services based on electoral outcomes, labeling such behavior as unacceptable.
Responding to the criticism, Shivakumar defended the Congress party’s commitment to its promises and guarantees, emphasizing the importance of trust and equality in governance. He asserted that the Congress stands by its pledges for the betterment of all citizens, and voters would respond to the BJP’s criticisms in the upcoming elections. The Karnataka Lok Sabha Polls are scheduled in two phases on April 26 and May 7, with results expected to be declared on June 4. The controversy surrounding Shivakumar’s statements adds a layer of tension to the electoral landscape, highlighting the importance of issues like water supply in the political discourse.
