  • Kolkata Rape-Murder: Mamata Sets Sunday Deadline for CBI, Demands Swift Justice

In a startling development, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has issued an unprecedented ultimatum to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the recent Kolkata rape and murder case that has shocked the nation. Banerjee demanded on Wednesday that the CBI not only solve the case but also ensure the hanging of the culprits by Sunday, August 18th.

The Chief Minister’s bold statement comes on the heels of the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the case from Kolkata Police to the CBI. Banerjee, known for her fiery rhetoric, asserted that the state police had already completed 90 percent of the investigation before the handover. “Within Sunday, CBI has to facilitate hanging of the guilty and complete the entire probe,” Banerjee declared, setting an extraordinarily tight deadline for the federal agency. She added, “Our Kolkata Police has completed 90 percent of the probe,” seemingly putting pressure on the CBI to swiftly conclude the investigation. The case in question involves the tragic death of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor, whose body was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9th. The victim’s family alleges she was raped and murdered, raising concerns about safety in medical institutions. While a civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the case, the transfer to the CBI suggests a more complex investigation may be necessary. The Calcutta High Court’s decision to hand over the case to the central agency came on Tuesday, just a day before Banerjee’s controversial statements. The Chief Minister’s demand for rapid investigation and execution has raised eyebrows among legal experts, who point out that such expedited justice would be virtually impossible within the existing legal framework. Critics argue that Banerjee’s statement may be more political posturing than a realistic expectation. As the CBI takes over the investigation, questions remain about the feasibility of meeting Banerjee’s deadline and the potential implications of such high-level political pressure on the judicial process. The case continues to grip public attention, highlighting issues of women’s safety and the complexities of India’s criminal justice system. This developing story underscores the tension between public demand for swift justice and the need for thorough, unbiased investigations in sensitive cases. As Sunday approaches, all eyes will be on the CBI and its response to this extraordinary challenge set forth by the West Bengal Chief Minister.
