The national capital is abuzz with preparations for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi, set to take place at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 9 at 7:15 pm. This historic event marks Modi’s third consecutive term as Prime Minister, following the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) resounding victory in the recent parliamentary elections.
President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Modi and his Union Council of Ministers, expected to comprise 27-30 members. Approximately one-third of these positions will be allocated to NDA allies, with additional ministers of state also being appointed. The ceremony will be a grand affair, with over 8,000 guests in attendance, including professionals, cultural performers, and leaders from neighboring countries. In line with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, dignitaries from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, and Seychelles are expected to attend. Notably, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed his presence.
Security measures have been heightened for the event. A multi-layered plan at Rashtrapati Bhawan includes five paramilitary companies, NSG commandos, drones, and snipers. A No-Fly Zone has been declared over Delhi from June 9 to 10, prohibiting aerial platforms to prevent potential threats. Special protocols are in place for foreign dignitaries, with top hotels like Leela, Taj, ITC Maurya, Claridges, and Oberoi under enhanced security.
In his address at Rashtrapati Bhavan after being named PM-designate, Modi emphasized the significance of the 18th Lok Sabha in India’s journey towards its centenary of independence in 2047. “This 18th Lok Sabha is an important milestone towards fulfilling those dreams when the country will celebrate 100 years of independence in 2047,” he stated.
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is expected to commence around June 15, with the oath-taking of newly elected members, election of a new Speaker, and the President’s address to a joint sitting of Parliament.
