A forest department employee in Jammu has been suspended following allegations of harassment against a nomadic worker in the Channi Himmat area. The suspension came after a video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking outrage and demands for immediate action against the official.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Jammu swiftly intervened, sending a clear message that government officials will not be allowed to act unlawfully or misuse their authority. The suspended employee was allegedly seen in the video snatching a sickle from a nomadic worker, identified as Mohd Junaid, who had reportedly been directed by the landowner to cut a tree on private property.

The incident drew sharp criticism from the public and social activists, with many calling for strict action. “This shocking incident necessitates an inquiry into what led the forest employee to resort to such condemnable behavior, which is unbecoming of a government servant,” said a social activist, preferring anonymity.

Reacting to the video, people demanded accountability and justice for the victim. Social media platforms were abuzz with calls for ensuring the safety and dignity of nomadic communities, who often face hardships while eking out a living through manual labor.

In a related development, Mohd Junaid has lodged a formal complaint with the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Channi Himmat Police Station, seeking the registration of an FIR against the forest employee under relevant sections of the law.

“This reprehensible act has instilled fear among nomadic workers. The police must act swiftly to investigate the matter and take appropriate legal action to restore their confidence,” the activist added.

The forest department has initiated an inquiry into the incident, while local police are also examining the complaint filed by the victim. The government’s prompt action in suspending the employee has been welcomed by many, who view it as a step toward ensuring accountability and protecting the rights of marginalized communities.  The incident has underscored the need for sensitizing government employees toward the struggles of vulnerable populations and ensuring that no official misuses their position to oppress or harass citizens.
