In a dramatic turn of events, the Jammu Police have rearrested a notorious criminal named Basharat Mehmood, who had managed to escape from police custody earlier this week.
Mehmood, who was involved in multiple highway robberies, had given authorities the slip while being transported to the District Court in Janipur. Acting on a tip-off, a team from Nagrota Police conducted raids in the Ganderbal area and apprehended three individuals who had aided in Mehmood’s escape and provided him shelter.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Zaffer Hussain Khatana alias Adil, a resident of Koteranka, Panhard in Rajouri district, Suhail Ahmad Kuhroo and his wife Sonia Kouser, residents of Athkhuroo Rabitar Shadipora in Ganderbal district.
According to the police statement, Khatana had hatched a criminal conspiracy to help Mehmood escape from police custody by providing him with a Pulsar motorcycle bearing registration number PB35AH 7759. The motorcycle has also been recovered by the authorities.
Kuhroo and his wife had given shelter to Mehmood and the other accused at their home in Ganderbal district after the daring escape.
A case under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), and 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused at the Janipur Police Station. The arrested individuals have been handed over to the Janipur Police for further investigation into the matter.
This incident highlights the persistent efforts of the Jammu Police in tracking down and apprehending criminals who try to evade the law.
