After carefully balancing the representation of both Jammu and Kashmir in his council of ministers, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has now taken the next strategic step by allocating key portfolios to his team. The move reflects his commitment to equitable governance across the Union Territory, ensuring that each region’s unique needs are addressed through targeted ministerial responsibilities.
The Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Surinder Kumar Choudhary, has been entrusted with an extensive portfolio, managing departments critical to infrastructure and economic development. He will oversee Public Works (R&B), Industries & Commerce, Mining, Labour & Employment, and Skill Development. His broad responsibilities reflect the government’s focus on economic revitalization and employment generation.
Ms. Sakeena Masood (Itoo), a key figure in the cabinet, has been assigned Health & Medical Education, School Education, Higher Education, and Social Welfare. Her portfolio highlights the government’s intent to strengthen the education system and improve healthcare facilities across the Union Territory.
In charge of environmental and tribal affairs, Mr. Javed Ahmed Rana has been allocated Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment, and Tribal Affairs. This move underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable development and addressing the needs of tribal communities.
Mr. Javid Ahmad Dar will handle Agriculture Production, Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Cooperative, and Election. His role is crucial in pushing forward the agricultural reforms and empowering rural areas through the Panchayati Raj system.
Finally, Mr. Satish Sharma, independent MLA Chhab assembly constituency of Jammu district has been given an important portfolio, managing Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Transport, Science & Technology, Information Technology, Youth Services & Sports, and ARI & Trainings.
This comprehensive set of responsibilities indicates a clear focus on youth development, technological advancement, and consumer welfare. Any departments not assigned to these ministers will remain under the purview of the Chief Minister, further centralizing the critical areas of governance.
This development follows the recent visit of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to the remote Warwan valley in Kishtwar, where he unveiled new disaster prevention measures and emergency response infrastructure.
