The Jammu and Kashmir Police today firmly denied allegations from various political parties that it has been harassing their workers at the behest of other parties.
In a statement, the J&K Police called such suggestions “without basis” and reiterated its resolve to enforce the law impartially and follow the Model Code of Conduct to ensure free and fair elections.
“There have been actions regardless of party affiliation pertaining to violations such as seizure of cash, narcotics, liquor and preventive actions against miscreants and potential offenders with a background of linkages to terrorism and separatism,” the statement said. It stressed that the Police is committed to providing full security to all candidates, political workers, rallies and roadshows across party lines.
The statement urged all parties to avoid making “speculative statements” against individual officers as it could endanger their security. “We reiterate our dedication and commitment to impartial enforcement of law,” it said, adding that criticism is accepted as “a professional hazard.”
The clarification comes amid allegations from several mainstream parties as well as newly-formed outfits that Police was harassing their workers and creating hurdles in their campaigning at the instance of rivals. Political temperatures have been running high in J&K ahead of the parliamentary and assembly elections scheduled over the next few months.
