The Rajouri district Police has categorically denied reports on social media that claimed a group of people were attacked while on their way to offer Eid prayers in Galhan area of Teryath tehsil.
According to the police rebuttal, the incident was a result of a prevailing dispute over a path in the area. “Due to a confrontation over a path, some people entered into a verbal duel which unfortunately turned into a scuffle between a few individuals, resulting in minor injuries to one person,” the police statement read.
Prompt action was taken by village elders, respected citizens and the police to pacify the situation. A meeting was also organized after the incident, attended by people from all walks of life, who vowed to maintain peace and order in the area.
The police have warned against the spread of baseless posts on social media giving a communal color to the scuffle over a path dispute. “Those using social media should understand that giving a communal touch to a scuffle over a land/path dispute can cause unrest in society,” cautioned the authorities. An inquiry into the matter is currently underway by the police and civil administration. Strict legal action has been warned against those attempting to disrupt peace by playing the role of communal instigators over the issue. The Rajouri Police has firmly rebutted claims of an attack relating to Eid prayers, terming such assertions as “devoid of facts” and an attempt to divert attention from the actual dispute over a path.
