Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and JKNC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Wednesday after an armed assailant breached a high-level security cordon and fired a shot at point-blank range during a private event.
The incident, which occurred at a marriage ceremony at Royal Park Greater Kailash in Jammu, has sparked immediate and pressing questions regarding severe lapses in the security protocols for one of the region’s most highly protected political figures.
According to eyewitness accounts and official statements, the attacker managed to bypass security checks and approach Dr. Abdullah. As the assailant discharged a loaded pistol, the close protection team—comprising Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) and National Security Guard (NSG) personnel—intervened in a split-second maneuver.
The security staff successfully deflected the shot, overpowered the gunman, and snatched the weapon before any fatal injuries could be inflicted. In a late-night media release, the Jammu South Police confirmed the arrest and identified the suspect: “An attempt was made on the life of Dr. Farooq Abdullah… when he was attending a marriage ceremony at Royal Park Greater Kailash, Jammu. The security personnel of JKP and NSG, who were deployed with the protectee, immediately swung into action and thwarted the attempt. Further, the accused was taken into custody, who was later identified as Kamal Singh S/o Ajit Singh R/o Purani Mandi, Jammu.”
Police also confirmed that the firearm used in the crime was recovered from Singh’s possession. Authorities have taken cognizance of the incident, and a full-scale investigation is currently underway.
While Dr. Abdullah survived unharmed, the incident highlights a glaring and potentially catastrophic security failure. Dr. Abdullah is a Z+ NSG protectee, the highest tier of security detail provided in India, which mandates rigorous perimeter controls, sterile zones, and advance security liaisons (ASL) for any public or private appearance. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to X (formerly Twitter) to express relief, while simultaneously demanding answers for the breach: “Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave. The details are sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to get within point blank range & discharge a shot. It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot & ensured that the assassination attempt failed. There are more questions than answers at the moment including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG protected former CM.”
Following the chaos, senior leaders within the National Conference moved quickly to reassure the public regarding the well-being of the leadership present at the event. Tanvir Sadiq, MLA Zadibal and Chief Spokesperson for the JKNC, confirmed via X that the leaders were unharmed.
“I have spoken to Dr. Farooq Abdullah Sahab, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Ji, and Nasir Aslam Wani Sb. Alhamdulillah, they are safe and fine.”
As the Jammu South Police interrogate the suspect, Kamal Singh, the focus of the investigation will likely split into two critical avenues: The Motive: Uncovering Singh’s intentions, potential affiliations, and how he acquired the firearm. The Security Lapse: A rigorous internal review by the JKP and NSG to determine how an armed individual slipped through multiple rings of advanced security to reach a Z+ protectee. Would you like me to draft a follow-up piece focusing specifically on the standard operating procedures of a Z+ NSG security detail to further highlight the severity of this breach?
