In a move aimed at safeguarding sensitive data ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha Elections, the authorities in District Rajouri have taken decisive action to suspend all Virtual Private Network (VPN) services.
The decision, communicated through an official directive from the office of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Rajouri, comes amidst concerns over the unprecedented surge in VPN usage by suspicious internet users across various parts of the district.
The communication, bearing reference No. CS/DPO/PE/2024/6687-9I and dated 23.04.2024, highlighted the alarming trend of heightened VPN activity observed in recent days. VPNs, known for their ability to encrypt transmissions, create point-to-point tunnels, and mask IP addresses, have been utilized by individuals to bypass website blocks and firewalls, posing a significant risk to data integrity, particularly concerning the upcoming elections and other sensitive information.
Recognizing the critical need to fortify defenses against potential cyber threats, Rajeev Kumar Khajurla, Additional District Magistrate, Rajouri, invoked the powers vested in him under Section 144 Cr.PC. In accordance with this authority, all forms of VPN usage on mobile phones within District Rajouri have been ordered to be suspended with immediate effect, remaining in force until the conclusion of the election process in the district.
This proactive measure underscores the administration’s commitment to upholding the sanctity of democratic processes and securing vital information from malicious exploitation. By preemptively curbing VPN access, authorities aim to mitigate the risk of cyber-attacks and ensure the integrity of electoral data, thus fostering a secure and transparent electoral environment.
While acknowledging the inconvenience this suspension may pose to some users, the administration emphasizes the paramount importance of safeguarding critical data against potential threats. It urges cooperation from all stakeholders in adhering to these temporary restrictions for the collective benefit of electoral integrity and cybersecurity within District Rajouri.
