In a remarkable feat, the Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, has achieved new heights in medical excellence, performing two major surgeries on the same day. These groundbreaking procedures have etched the hospital’s name in the annals of Jammu’s medical history.
22nd Successful Renal Transplant
The transplant team at SSH Jammu, under the guidance of Principal Medical College Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, MS, SSH Dr. Rehana Khurshid, and Deputy MS, SSH Dr. Sanjogita Soodan, has successfully completed the 22nd renal transplant procedure. The surgical team, led by Dr. Elias Sharma, Professor and Head of Urology, along with Dr. Rahul Gupta, Dr. Ajay Anand, Dr. Muzzain, Dr. Sunil K Bhat, Dr. Yasir, and Dr. Chetan, exhibited extraordinary expertise and dedication in performing this life-changing operation.
The medical management team, comprising Dr. Abdul Majeed (DM Nephrology), Dr. Raju Bhandari, Dr. Aman Gupta, Dr. Anuradha, Dr. Ashish, Dr. Baljeet, and Dr. Pranas from the Nephrology Department, played a crucial role in ensuring the successful transplant workup, dialysis decisions, immunosuppressant management, cross-matching, and postoperative care.
The anesthesia team, consisting of Dr. Anju Gupta (Professor & HoD), Dr. Samriti Gulati (Professor), Dr. Ashwini (Professor), Dr. Anjali Mehta (Associate Professor), Dr. Amit Manhas (Associate Professor), and Dr. Ranika (Lecturer), provided vital support during the procedure. The recipient, a 45-year-old patient suffering from end-stage kidney disease and on dialysis for over six months, is now on the path to recovery, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the medical team.
Open Heart Surgery Success
In a separate yet equally remarkable achievement, the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) at SSH Jammu has been performing all major intra-extracardiac, thoracic, and vascular procedures with outstanding results. Recently, on March 26, 2024, the department successfully performed a mitral valve replacement on a critically ill patient suffering from severe mitral regurgitation with perforated anterior mitral leaflets. The patient, who had multisystem problems and was in critical condition, underwent the operation with the support of senior cardiologists present in the operating theatre to provide on-table echocardiography assistance. The patient has now been extubated and is hemodynamically stable, off inotropic support, and on full oral intake.
These groundbreaking surgeries were made possible by the collaborative efforts of various departments, including cardiothoracic anesthesia, the intensive care unit, and the Department of Cardiology, whose active support and cooperation were instrumental in achieving these remarkable successes.
The Super Specialty Hospital in Jammu has once again demonstrated its commitment to providing world-class medical care and pushing the boundaries of medical excellence, setting new benchmarks for healthcare in the region.
