Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi has taken over the esteemed role of Vice Chief of the Army Staff, effective from February 19, 2024.
The transition of command marks a pivotal moment in Lieutenant General Dwivedi’s illustrious military career, as he steps into a key leadership position within the country’s armed forces.
Lieutenant General Dwivedi’s assumption of the Vice Chief of Army Staff appointment was marked by solemn ceremonies, including a wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial, where he paid homage to the fallen heroes of the nation. Subsequently, he was accorded a Guard of Honour at the South Block Lawns, a customary military tradition symbolizing the respect and recognition bestowed upon senior military leaders.
Prior to his appointment as Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command, operating in challenging operational environments from 2022 to 2024. His tenure in the Northern Command showcased his leadership abilities and strategic acumen in navigating complex security scenarios along the northern and western borders of the country.
With a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades, Lieutenant General Dwivedi brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. A graduate of the renowned Sainik School in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, he was commissioned into the 18 JAMMU & KASHMIR RIFLES in 1984, where he later assumed command responsibilities.
Throughout his career, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi has held a myriad of command and staff appointments across different operational theaters. His leadership roles have included commanding units in both the Kashmir Valley and Rajasthan, serving as Sector Commander and Inspector General Assam Rifles in the North East, and overseeing operations along the Western Borders as Commander of the Rising Star Corps.
Lieutenant General Dwivedi’s contributions extend beyond the operational realm, as he has played a crucial role in enhancing the capabilities and modernization initiatives of the Indian Army. His tenure as Director General Infantry saw significant strides in the procurement of advanced weapons systems, contributing to the overall readiness and effectiveness of the armed forces.
Furthermore, Lieutenant General Dwivedi’s academic achievements underscore his commitment to professional development and academic excellence. He has completed prestigious courses at institutions such as the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, the Army War College in Mhow, and the US Army War College in Carlisle, where he was honored as a ‘Distinguished Fellow.’
As Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi assumes the responsibilities of Vice Chief of the Army Staff, succeeding Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar, he is poised to steer the Indian Army towards new heights of operational readiness and strategic preparedness, reaffirming his dedication to serving the nation with honor, integrity, and excellence.
