In a momentous event at Shoft Shipyard Pvt Ltd in Bharuch, Gujarat, the 25T Bollard Pull (BP) Tug, named Baljeet, was launched on March 10th, 2024, heralding a significant milestone in India’s maritime sector.
Cmde Rajat Nagar, WPS (Mbi), presided over the launch ceremony, symbolizing the culmination of meticulous planning and diligent efforts in the construction of the Baljeet Tug. He remarked, “The launch of the Baljeet Tug signifies a remarkable achievement for India’s maritime industry, showcasing our nation’s capabilities in shipbuilding.”
The Baljeet Tug stands as a proud emblem of the “Make in India” initiative championed by the Government of India. Reflecting on this initiative, a representative from Shoft Shipyard Pvt Ltd stated, “We are honored to contribute to the ‘Make in India’ vision through the construction of the Baljeet Tug. This project underscores our commitment to fostering indigenous manufacturing capabilities and bolstering self-reliance in the maritime sector.”
Underlining the strategic significance of the project, the representative added, “The construction and delivery of three 25T BP Tugs are in line with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, aimed at strengthening our maritime defense capabilities and enhancing operational efficiency.” These Tugs, built under the stringent classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), are poised to play a pivotal role in supporting the operational commitments of the Indian Navy. Commodore (Retd.) Anil Kumar, a maritime expert, emphasized, “The Baljeet Tug will bolster the Indian Navy’s capabilities by providing vital assistance during berthing and un-berthing operations, as well as maneuvering in confined waters.” Moreover, the Tug’s firefighting capabilities and its potential to conduct limited Search and Rescue Operations were hailed as crucial assets in safeguarding maritime activities. “The Baljeet Tug exemplifies India’s commitment to maritime safety and security,” remarked a senior official from the Ministry of Defence. The successful launch of the Baljeet Tug marks a significant stride towards achieving self-sufficiency and innovation in the maritime industry. It underscores India’s determination to emerge as a global leader in shipbuilding, while also fortifying its maritime defense capabilities.
