The upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the Udhampur constituency of Jammu and Kashmir are shaping up to be a high-stakes political battle, with the likely entry of Choudhary Lal Singh stirring the proverbial hornet’s nest. Singh, a former minister and two-time Member of Parliament from the region, parted ways with the Congress party in 2014 after the party fielded Ghulam Nabi Azad, another prominent leader, from the same constituency.
In a significant development in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, Choudhary Lal Singh, the former minister and two-time Member of Parliament from Udhampur, today officially joined the Congress party. The formal induction ceremony took place in New Delhi, in the presence of senior Congress leaders. Singh’s entry into the grand old party marks his return to the political fold he had parted ways with in 2014 over differences regarding the party’s candidate selection for the Udhampur Lok Sabha seat. With Singh’s inclusion, the Congress party is expected to receive a boost in the region, as the former minister brings with him a substantial support base and years of political experience. This move sets the stage for an intense battle in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, where Singh is likely to be the Congress candidate from Udhampur, a seat he has represented twice in the past.
Singh’s decision to quit the Congress was due to his ignorance by the party’s high command against ‘Modi Wave’ that had swept the nation during the 2014 general elections. However, his departure did little to prevent the BJP’s juggernaut, as Dr. Jitendra Singh emerged victorious and subsequently joined the Narendra Modi-led government as a Union Minister.
Fast forward to the present day, and the political landscape has undergone a seismic shift. Ghulam Nabi Azad, who lost the 2014 election from Udhampur, formed his own party, the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), in September 2022, and has declared G.M. Saroori as the party’s candidate for the same constituency for 2024 Lok Sabha Polls.
The entry of Choudhary Lal Singh into the fray, potentially as a Congress candidate, is likely to further intensify the contest, potentially reshaping the equations in a region that has traditionally been a stronghold for both the BJP and the Congress. Singh’s decision to contest from Udhampur, a seat he represented twice in the Lok Sabha, is expected to garner significant support from his loyal vote bank.
The BJP, on the other hand, has already fielded Dr. Jitendra Singh for the third consecutive term from Udhampur, banking on his successful track record and ministerial experience. This decision sets the stage for a contest between the BJP, the Congress (or its potential ally), and Azad’s DPAP, leading to a potential split in the traditional vote banks and making the outcome of the Udhampur Lok Sabha election a closely watched affair.
As the campaign intensifies, the electorate of Udhampur will be faced with a unique set of choices, each candidate bringing their own brand of experience, reputation, and political ideology to the table. The voters’ decision will ultimately shape the region’s political future and determine the course of development and representation in the years to come.
Speculation of Choudhary Lal Singh’s entry into the Congress party began long ago, when he rushed with supporters to welcome Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra at Lakhanpur in Jammu and Kashmir. However, Singh accompained his supporters faced ‘humiliation’ when he was not invited on stage, from where senior leaders like Dr. Farooq Abdullah and others addressed the gathering. It was later, during the Bharat Jodo Yatra’s stop in Udhampur, that Rahul Gandhi apologized for the unintentional ‘ignorance’ towards Choudhary Lal Singh at Lakhanpur.
It is pertinent to mention here that Choudhary Lal Singh quit the Congress party in 2014 because the party had a ‘blind faith’’ that Azad would win despite the Modi wave, but that did not happen. After leaving Congress, Choudhary Lal Singh contested and won the Assembly polls on a BJP ticket from the Basholi constituency. He served in the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed-led council of ministers, which was later headed by Mehbooba Mufti after the demise of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in 2016. However, Choudhary Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga were both sacked as ministers by the BJP high command over the Rasana case, in which a tribal girl was raped and murdered.
The upcoming electoral battle in Udhampur promises to be a closely watched affair, with the entry of Choudhary Lal Singh adding a new layer of complexity and intrigue to an already highly competitive political landscape. As the campaign unfolds, voters will be tasked with weighing the candidates’ credentials, achievements, and visions for the region, ultimately deciding the course of Udhampur’s political future.
The Congress party seems to be struggling to find a potential candidate who can withstand the persistent Modi wave in Jammu and Kashmir. In contrast, the BJP had already announced its strong leadership well before the imposition of the model code of conduct (MCC), having issued its first and second lists of candidates. However, the Congress party is still in the process of finalizing its candidates, as many political analysts opine that the party is facing a leadership crisis in the region.
