In a remarkable achievement, Mohammad Ibrahim Salaria, a third-year B.Tech student from the Civil Engineering Department at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, has been selected for the 2024 MITACS Globalink Research Internship award. This prestigious honor will allow him to join the University of Northern British Columbia in Canada for a short-term research engagement.

Salaria’s selection has been warmly celebrated by the NIT Srinagar fraternity, with Director Prof. A. Ravinder Nath and Registrar Prof. Atikur Rahman extending their heartfelt congratulations to the talented student. They praised Salaria’s accomplishment, stating, “Bagging of this global internship opportunity not only brings honor to the CE student but also to NIT Srinagar, showcasing the institute’s commitment to fostering an environment that encourages academic excellence and research innovation.”

The esteemed opportunity was facilitated through an agreement between NIT Srinagar and the University of Northern British Columbia, with the Mitacs organization administering the funding grant for Salaria’s research project. Specifically, he has been chosen to participate in the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship program, a competitive initiative that pairs top-ranked international students with faculty at Canadian academic institutions for a twelve-week research project of mutual interest between May and July 2024. Expressing his gratitude, Salaria said, “I am deeply honored and thrilled to have been chosen for the Globalink Internship Program. This opportunity is truly a dream come true for me, and I am enthusiastic about contributing to impactful research while immersing myself in Canada’s academic environment.” He also extended his heartfelt appreciation to his mentor, Dr. Khalid Muzamil Gani, for the unwavering support throughout his journey.

During his internship, Salaria will be under the supervision of Prof. Mauricio Dziedzic, a faculty member at the University of Northern British Columbia, Canada. Their collaborative research project, titled ‘Environmental Impacts of Dam Breaks,’ will delve into the significant risks associated with dam failure, particularly the rapid flooding downstream, which poses threats to life and property. Additionally, the research will explore the consequences on infrastructure and the environment, including the release of debris, mud, and other materials stored in the reservoir, such as mining tailings, which can lead to severe environmental consequences. The overarching goal of this research program is to develop a comprehensive analytical framework for assessing the environmental impacts of dam breaks, contributing to the wider efforts in mitigating and managing the risks associated with such incidents.

Salaria’s selection for this prestigious internship not only highlights his academic prowess but also underscores NIT Srinagar’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering an environment conducive to research and innovation. His achievements serve as an inspiration to fellow students and underscore the institute’s role in preparing its scholars to make significant contributions on the global stage.
