Across the vast expanse of India, the summer sun was outshone by the vibrancy and festive atmosphere at polling stations as the world’s largest democracy embarked on its electoral journey today. Undeterred by rains in certain parts like Udhampur, J&K, citizens turned out in large numbers, patiently waiting in long queues to exercise their democratic right.

In a historic simultaneous electoral exercise, 102 Parliamentary Constituencies and 92 Assembly Constituencies in the North-Eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim went to polls today, marking the commencement of the gigantic electoral process.

As of 1 PM, substantial voter turnouts were reported across many States and Union Territories, reflecting the nation’s enthusiasm for democratic participation. The polling process progressed smoothly and peacefully across all 21 States and Union Territories in Phase I. Visuals of voters standing in serpentine queues, eagerly awaiting their chance to cast their ballots, were witnessed across polling stations as voting began simultaneously across 102 Parliamentary Constituencies at 7 AM.

The meticulous two-year preparations for the seamless conduct of the polls, spearheaded by the Election Commission led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, have paid rich dividends. In a kaleidoscope of democracy in action, voters of all ages—from energetic youths to wise elders, couples, tribals, persons with disabilities, and beaming newly-weds—joined the electoral festivities, painting a vibrant mosaic of Indian culture at polling stations.

The polling has been marked by its largely peaceful and orderly conduct, reflecting the nation’s commitment to democratic ideals. The festive spirit was on full display, with voters donning fashionable ethnic and modern attire, transforming polling stations into vibrant celebrations of India’s diversity.

Heartening stories of grit, resolve, and determination to exercise the coveted franchise have emerged. In Kurung Kumey District of Arunachal Pradesh, an elderly voter opted to cast her vote at the polling station despite having the option to vote from home, exemplifying the deep-rooted democratic spirit.

Elsewhere, a first-time voter, Ms. Devaki, adorned in traditional attire in Dindori, Madhya Pradesh, expressed her happiness by proudly striking a pose with her inked finger after casting her vote. Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, newly-married voters also proudly took to social media to post selfies with their ink-marked fingers, symbolizing their participation in the democratic process. Scenes from polling stations today saw efforts in ensuring inclusive elections bear fruit as voters from Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) enthusiastically participated, with the Great Andamanese Tribe from Strait Island in South Andaman also exercising their franchise. The Election Commission has placed particular emphasis on turning voting into a pleasant and memorable experience. Assured Minimum Facilities like water, sheds, toilets, ramps, volunteers, wheelchairs, and electricity were provided to ensure that every voter, including the elderly and persons with disabilities, could cast their vote with ease. Even in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas in Chhattisgarh, peaceful voting was reported, reflecting the resilience of India’s democratic spirit. As the sun sets on the first phase of polling, India’s democratic spectacle has once again shone bright, inspiring hope and pride in the hearts of its citizens and the world at large.
