In a swift sea-air coordinated operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) apprehended an Iranian fishing vessel with six Indian crew members aboard, west of Beypore off the coast of Kerala late on May 5, 2024. The successful operation involved ships and aircraft of the ICG, highlighting their vigilance in safeguarding the nation’s maritime borders.
Upon intercepting the vessel, an ICG team swiftly boarded and conducted a thorough investigation to ascertain any involvement in anti-national activities. Initial findings revealed that the boat was owned by an Iranian sponsor who had contracted the Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu. The fishermen were issued Iranian visas purportedly for fishing off the coast of Iran.
However, the crew members alleged mistreatment and deprivation of basic living conditions by the sponsor, who also confiscated their passports. Facing dire circumstances, the crew made the decision to escape from Iran to India using the same vessel. The detained vessel, along with its crew, was safely escorted to Kochi for further investigation on May 6, 2024. The ICG remains committed to maintaining maritime security and ensuring the safety of seafarers in Indian waters.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by fishermen who often fall victim to exploitation and abuse while working in foreign waters.
