In a major breakthrough against narco-terrorism in the region, the Uri police have busted a drug smuggling module operating in the area and seized a huge cache of contraband worth around Rs 50 crore in the international market.
Acting on specific inputs, the Uri police registered a case under the NDPS Act on May 8 regarding two suspects, Mehmood Ahmad Najar and Sajad Ahmad Malik, who were allegedly involved in narcotic smuggling activities. During sustained questioning, the two accused revealed that they had concealed a large quantity of contraband substance and cash proceeds in Churanda village. The police conducted searches along with an executive magistrate and army assistance. The joint team recovered a staggering 7.8 kg of contraband estimated to be worth around Rs 50 crore. Cash amounting to Rs 12,63,500 was also seized from their possession.
Further investigations led to the arrest of a third accused, Fayaz Ahmad Hajam, who was found to have smuggled the contraband from Pakistan. More cash proceeds were recovered from his residence based on his disclosure statement.
According to police sources, the narco-smuggling module had links with handlers operating from Pakistan. Three accused have been arrested so far and further investigations are underway to unravel the wider conspiracy. This major drug haul has dealt a severe blow to the narco-terror networks operating in the region, which use proceeds from drug trafficking to finance terrorist activities. The Uri police have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on such anti-national forces with a heavy hand.
