In a remarkable display of selflessness and dedication to public service, Dr. A.D.S. Manhas, a retired Medical Superintendent from GMC Jammu, has opted to draw a mere Rs 1 as his salary after being engaged as the State Anti-Fraud Officer in the J&K State Health Agency, AB-PMJAY (Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana).
The engagement of Dr. Manhas on a contractual basis was formalized through Order No. 239-SHA of 2024, dated 29/02/2024, issued by the Chief Executive Officer of the State Health Agency, AB-PMJAY, Jammu & Kashmir.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Manhas expressed his profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve society once again. He stated, “In reference to the above-cited subject, a great privilege has been bestowed upon me by the Health & Medical Education Department, Govt of J&K, by engaging me post-retirement as State Anti-Fraud Officer on a contractual basis in the State Health Agency. I feel it is a great honor and opportunity to serve the society. Therefore, as a token of my gratitude, I would request your good self to draw Rs 1 only as salary in my favor from the State Health Agency.”
Dr. Manhas’s decision to opt a salary of Rs1 has been praised the general public alike, who have commended his selfless spirit and unwavering commitment to public service. His gesture is seen as a shining example of how retired professionals can continue to contribute to society’s well-being, even after their active careers.
Dr. Manhas’s appointment as the State Anti-Fraud Officer comes at a time when the government is prioritizing the effective delivery of healthcare services and ensuring transparency in the implementation of various schemes. Earlier, in July 2022 severing as Medical Superintendent of the Government Medical College Jammu, in recognition of his exceptional service and commitment, was bestowed with the prestigious State Award for Meritorious Service for the year 2021. The award ceremony witnessed Dr. Manhas receiving a Gold Medal, a citation, and a cheque of Rs 51,000 from the Director of Finance and Additional Secretary of the General Administration Department on behalf of the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir. An alumnus of GMC Jammu, Dr. Manhas has served the Border Security Force (BSF) for five years and is widely acclaimed for his sincerity, dedication, passion for contributing, and fiscal honesty. He was appointed as the Medical Superintendent of GMCH Jammu during the peak of the second COVID wave, Dr. Manhas has been lauded for his excellent work in leading the institution through challenging times.
