In a dramatic turn of events, former Sarpanch Lok Nath, along with ex-Panch members and local residents, dismantled the foundation of a bridge on the Banpuri to Jogi Nallah road in PW(R&B) Sub Division, Sunderbani of Nowshera division, Rajouri district.
The group alleges misappropriation of funds, alterations to the detailed project report (DPR), and use of substandard materials in the construction of road and bridge works.
Lok Nath has threatened self-immolation if the administration fails to take action against officials of the Public Works (Roads & Buildings) Department allegedly involved in the irregularities.
Speaking to the media at the site, Lok Nath claimed, “The DPR proposed a five-kilometer road including culverts and a bridge. However, field staff have reportedly altered the DPR on their own, bypassing at least two or three localities to fill their pockets and give undue benefits to the contractor.”
The ex-Sarpanch further alleged that instead of concrete mix, the contractor had filled the bridge foundation with huge boulders, prompting their decision to dismantle it. He also accused the agency engaged by PW(R&B) of using a Check Dam built by the Panchayat as a bridge, warning that it could be damaged by passing vehicles.
“We are glad that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is reaching new heights every day. You can see changes on the ground everywhere. However, some corrupt public servants and contractors are taking every opportunity to make money. These elements should be brought to justice,” he added.
A local engineer, speaking on condition of anonymity, supported these claims, stating, “The state exchequer is being bled by greedy officials of the PW(R&B) Department and the contractors. Who authorized them to alter the DPR? If the government has provided funds as per the DPR, the same should be utilized on the ground.”
The engineer suggested that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) should investigate the alleged scam, estimating the project’s value at Rs 5 crore. He also called for the cancellation of the contractor’s license for allegedly reducing the road length against the approved DPR.
These serious allegations raise questions about the oversight and transparency in the execution of public works projects in the region. As of now, officials from the PW(R&B) Department have not responded on these accusations.
