In a historic milestone for the Indian Army, Colonel Anshu Jamwal has become the first woman officer to take command of an operational Air Defence regiment.

Col. Jamwal, hailing from the village of Rahya in Jammu and Kashmir, has carved out an impressive career since her commissioning from the Officers Training Academy in Chennai on March 18, 2006. A graduate of Government College for Women Gandhinagar in Jammu, she has consistently pushed boundaries throughout her military journey.
Her diverse experience includes serving as an instructor at both the Officers Training Academy in Chennai and the Air Defence College. Col. Jamwal’s expertise extends beyond national borders, having served as a Military Observer with the United Nations peacekeeping force MONUSCO, further broadening her international peacekeeping credentials.
Upon returning to India, Col. Jamwal’s talents were recognized with a posting at Army Headquarters. Now, she embarks on her most challenging role yet, taking command of an operational Air Defence regiment – a position never before held by a woman officer in the Indian Army.
The significance of this appointment is not lost on Col. Jamwal’s family. Her father, Bir Singh Jamwal, expressed immense pride in his daughter’s accomplishment. “We are happy that our daughter will command an air defence regiment and she has become the first woman officer to do so,” he stated, having witnessed the momentous occasion of her taking command.
Bir Singh Jamwal revealed that his daughter’s journey to this historic position was not without its challenges. While the family initially encouraged her to pursue a career in academics, Col. Jamwal’s determination to “do something different” prevailed. Her father recounted how he supported her aspirations, even joining her for training runs around Gandhi Memorial Degree College in Jammu. “Initially we wanted her to become a teacher, but she wanted to do something different. I decided to support her,” he said, highlighting the importance of family support in achieving such groundbreaking feats. Col. Jamwal’s appointment is not just a personal triumph but a beacon of inspiration for aspiring women officers across India. It underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to providing equal opportunities and recognizing merit, regardless of gender.
