In the aftermath of the devastating landslide that struck Wayanad, Kerala, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has emerged as a key first responder, launching comprehensive rescue and relief operations from the early hours of July 30, 2024.

Working in close coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state administration, the IAF has been at the forefront of efforts to mitigate the impact of this natural disaster.

The IAF’s transport fleet has been instrumental in the crisis response, with the C-17 Globemaster III heavy-lift aircraft delivering 53 metric tons of critical supplies. These include a Bailey bridge, dog squads for search operations, medical aid, and various essential equipment to support rescue efforts. Complementing the C-17’s operations, An-32 and C-130 aircraft have been deployed to ferry additional relief materials and personnel. In a significant logistical achievement, IAF aircraft have facilitated the movement of over 200 individuals, including specialized rescue teams and displaced residents, to and from the affected areas. This rapid mobilization has been crucial in bolstering the on-ground response and providing aid to those in dire need.

Despite challenging weather conditions hampering flight operations, the IAF has persistently sought windows of opportunity to conduct Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions. A diverse helicopter fleet, including Mi-17 transport helicopters and indigenous Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH), has been deployed to support these critical operations.

As of the evening of July 31, 2024, IAF aircraft continue to evacuate stranded individuals to nearby medical facilities and safe zones, while simultaneously delivering essential supplies. The helicopter units have been particularly effective in airlifting a significant number of people from areas rendered inaccessible by the landslide, ensuring their swift and safe relocation.

The IAF’s rapid response and ongoing commitment to the relief efforts underscore its vital role in disaster management. As rescue operations continue, the IAF remains steadfast in its pledge to provide all possible assistance to the affected population in Kerala, demonstrating the force’s preparedness and dedication to serving the nation in times of crisis. This coordinated response by the IAF, working alongside other agencies, highlights the importance of inter-organizational cooperation in effectively addressing natural disasters and minimizing their impact on vulnerable communities.
