Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM assumed the prestigious position of Director General Assam Rifles (DGAR) on August 1, 2024, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a distinguished military career spanning over three decades. Commissioned from the 86 Regular Course at Indian Military Academy into 4 SIKH LI on June 9, 1990, Lt Gen Lakhera’s journey to the top echelons of the Indian Army is marked by a series of notable achievements and diverse experiences. A highly educated officer, Lt Gen Lakhera is an alumnus of several esteemed institutions. He holds a Post Graduate degree from Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and has completed the Higher Defence Management Course. His academic pursuits reached an international level when he successfully completed the National Defence Course at The Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) in London, UK. Throughout his career, Lt Gen Lakhera has held a variety of significant positions, including Divisional Officer and Tactical Training Officer at NDA, Khadakwasla, and Director MO-2 at Army Headquarters. His command experiences are equally impressive, having led the 15 Infantry Brigade at Sriganganagar and served as the Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) from January 2022 to March 2024. Lt Gen Lakhera’s operational experience is particularly noteworthy. He has served across diverse terrain profiles and operational areas, including the Line of Control, International Border, and the Northeast. His expertise in counter-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and Nagaland has been instrumental in shaping his leadership approach.
For his exemplary service, Lt Gen Lakhera has been decorated with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card, and two GOC-in-C Commendation Cards.
Hailing from the Tehri district of Uttarakhand, Lt Gen Lakhera completed his graduation from DAV PG College, Dehradun, before joining the Indian Military Academy. His academic achievements also include an MSc from Madras University, an MA from King’s College, London, and a Masters in Management Studies from Osmania University. Lt Gen Lakhera is supported by his spouse, Mrs. Vibha Lakhera, a freelance educator and active social worker. The couple has two sons, Arjun and Krishna. As Lt Gen Lakhera takes on this new role, his diverse experience, academic background, and proven leadership are expected to bring fresh perspectives to the Assam Rifles, India’s oldest paramilitary force. His appointment comes at a crucial time, as the force continues to play a vital role in maintaining security and fostering development in the Northeastern region of India.
