Police teams led by SDPO Banihal and SHO Banihal rushed to the spot, preserved the crime scene, and called the FSL team, crime photographer, and senior officers. During inspection, the bodies were identified to be of a woman, around 30-32 years old, her daughter aged 9, and her son aged 5. All three bore visible injury marks with elongated cloth pieces tied around their necks, confirming homicidal death.

The deceased were later identified as: Dhanmati Devi (30) wife of Late Nand Kishore, Suhani Kumari (9), daughter, Yash Kumar (5), son trio resident of Nauwadeeh Sugauli, East Champaran, Bihar. The bodies were shifted to SDH Banihal for post-mortem after a medical board was constituted by the BMO.

Given the gravity of the crime, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SDPO Banihal was constituted. Through a mix of technical surveillance, human intelligence, and scientific analysis, police zeroed in on a suspect. After strenuous efforts, the accused, Anil Kumar, son of Sudhir Sahni, resident of Bahuarwa, West Champaran (Bihar), was apprehended from Mir Bazar area under Qazigund Police Station in District Kulgam.

During sustained interrogation and scientific corroboration, the accused confessed to committing the crime.
